The definition of a Glauber, or coherent, state is

$$a|\alpha\rangle = \alpha|\alpha\rangle.$$

Why is this a useful definition? Grynberg's Quantum Optics book simply says "a quasi-classical state $|\alpha\rangle$ is the eigenstate of the annihilation operator $a$.
